    Gavin's 82nd Airborne Division was given a very difficult task to accomplish during Market Garden. Assigned an area that demanded the deployment of two divisions, the 82nd had to secure eleven bridges crossing two rivers and a canal whilst the Groesbeek Heights and an airborne army headquarters that landed with them necessitated troops held back for security. Soon after landing, Gavin's airborne troops were pushed to their limits to defend the division area against German counterattacks and simultaneously capture the bridges in Nijmegen in one of the most dramatic actions in American military history, in close cooperation with the British ground troops.
