The Island – The 101st Airborne Division on The Island

On the night of September 25-26, 1944, the remains of British 1st Airborne Division retreated across the Rhine. This brought Operation Market Garden to an end. However, this did not mean that the fighting along the Corridor, around Groesbeek and in the area between Nijmegen and Arnhem – dubbed ‘The Island’ by Allied troops – also stopped.The Allied units in the area of ​​operations were halted in many places and the fighting took on the character of static warfare. This static warfare was particularly prominent on ‘The Island’.

During this tour you will visit the places that have been central during the operations and actions of the 101st Airborne Division in the Betuwe. You will visit “coffin’s corner”, the place of the Crossroads Battle, Operation Pegasus I, Opheusden, and other places of interest. You will see where and hear how the soldiers of this the 101st controlled the area, what difficulties they faced, and how they repelled German counter-attacks and infiltrations.
