475.00

At the end of September, the American 101st Airborne Division will be transferred to the Betuwe – the stretch of land between Nijmegen and Arnhem, dubbed ‘The Island’ by Allied troops. Instead of returning to England and preparing for another airborne mission, they were ordered to defend this area during October and November 1944. On this static front, the Airbornes had to withstand fierce German counter-attacks and infiltrations, artillery shelling, dangerous patrols, rain, wind and bitter cold.

This static warfare was particularly prominent on ‘The Island’.

During this tour you will visit the places that have been central during the operations and actions of the 101st Airborne Division in the Betuwe. You will visit “coffin’s corner”, the place of the Crossroads Battle, Operation Pegasus I, Opheusden, and other places of interest. You will see where and hear how the soldiers of this the 101st controlled the area, what difficulties they faced, and how they repelled German counter-attacks and infiltrations.
