900.00

Our Market Garden 2-day Highlights Tour is a great way of exploring the major sites of this operation in a limited amount of time.

The tour

This tour will start at the Dutch Belgian border where we will look at the capture of Joe’s Bridge on 10 September 1944. From there we will follow XXX Corps’ advance into The Netherlands and explore the site where the Germans ambushed the British tanks. From there we will follow the route through Valkenswaard to Eindhoven, stopping at the site where the Germans held up XXX Corps on the second day of operations.

From there, we will go to the area of the US 101st Airborne Division. Our first stop Son Bridge – the one the Germans blew up – where we will share the story of the failed capture of the bridge, the Bailey bridge and the German counterattacks on this bridge. Moving onwards, we will explore some of the other sites along Hell’s Highway where the Germans cut the route of advance.

Next, we will switch to the area of the US 82nd Airborne Division, where we will look at the capture of the bridge at Grave, the one of the dropzones of the US 82nd Airborne Division near Groesbeek. Of course, we will also visit the site of the famous Waal Crossing.

Continuing our tour, we will go to the area of operations of British 1st Airborne Division. Here, we will visit the Bridge at Arnhem, which was so heavily fought over before ending our tour in Oosterbeek to look at the fighting in the Oosterbeek perimeter and the withdrawal of the remnants of British 1st Airborne Division during the night of 25-26 September 1944.

Highlights: 30 Corps breakout at the Belgian-Dutch border, US 101e Airborne Division around Eindhoven, US 82e Airborne Division around Nijmegen, British 1e Airborne Division around Arnhem.

Description

Three airborne divisions and one Polish Parachute Brigade land on several locations in the Netherlands in September 1944 in order to seize the bridges around Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem. At the same time, British Second Army will attack from their positions on the Dutch-Belgian border and strike north to link up with each airborne division, taking the British Army across the Rhine to Harderwijk. This would both bottle up those units of the German Army in the western part of the Netherlands and put the British Army into a position to attack eastward into Germany. Operatie Market Garden – as this operation was dubbed – would become and still is the largest airborne operation in history. Though the execution of this plan did bring the results the Allies hoped for, the operation still captures the imagination and attention of historians and the general public alike. During this two-day tour you will visit the most iconic and most important places of Market Garden, giving you a thorough overview of the events that unfolded at the locations and how these events affected the broader battle.
