We did a tour with Edwin following in the steps of my husband's father's cousin who was killed in the last days of the war. Edwin helped us trace the route he would have taken and found the spot where he was killed and the small bridge named after him. It was really interesting and made us very thankful that a previous generation sacrificed so much for us. Edwin's knowledge was excellent and he had really done his research thoroughly - thank you.

Edwin’s knowledge is unbelievable and he is a great bloke, which made this tour incredible. He was able to ensure we kept clear on the who and when so that... read more we could follow the events as we moved around. I engaged the services of Edwin Popken as a guide for a private, 2 day family tour around Bastogne and surrounding area. The purpose being to trace the footsteps of... read more my father, a member of the 501st PIR 101ABN, during his experiences during the “ Battle of the Bulge “.
With a bit of name, unit, date history, Edwin led my group through sequences of events that occurred from Dec.16, 1944- mid Jan.1945. He was able to take me to the actual villages, fields, and buildings that my father and his E company1st platoon were positioned during the fighting.
He provided a very precise explanation of events and timetables around these specific positions and areas. Vintage aerial reconnaissance photos compared to modern ones defined the battlefield borders and lines. We were able to visually see a building in Bizory where my father was slightly wounded during a German attack. We also visited actual remaining foxholes that were positions held by my father’s E company. The most important location visited by us was the Church in Recogne where my father was seriously wound on Jan9,1945. Before and after photos of the damaged church steeple verified the reports of 1st plt. E co.
Edward’s knowledge, passion for historical accuracy and patience made this trip for my wife and I, my daughters and sons in law, plus 6 grandchildren an unforgettable experience.
I highly recommend his services.????????

Spent two days with Edwin in August looking at the Canadian contribution of Operation Veritable on day one and Operation Plunder (Crossing of the Rhine) on day two. Firstly I... read more would state that both of these operations deserve much more time to explore fully. They were such large operations and lost behind events such as Normandy and Arnhem/Market Garden. The troop numbers were huge and I am the first to admit that I did not fully understand the magnitude of both operations.
Edwin Popkin from Battlefield Discovery is by far the best guide in Europe for these operations. His knowledge and delivery brings to life those fateful events from so many years ago. You walk the ground, witness the events and have such an understanding what these men went through to remove the evil which stood in front of them back in 1944/45. I could not recommend this company enough. If you are a small private party, like us or a large corporate entity, Edwin and his team at Battlefield Discovery should be your go to guys. We will certainly be booking again in 2023.

Edwin provided a great experience during my recent visit to Belgium and Germany. My father fought in WW2 and was in the 4th division, 22nd Regiment. He was wounded in... read more the Hurtgen Forest in November 1944 and again near Prum, Germany in 1945. Edwin took us to both places. He clearly did a good deal of research in advance and that allowed us to closely trace my dad's footsteps. He even had obtained copies of my dad's draft registration and hospital records from his wounds. We also visited Henri Chapelle Military Cemetery where my dad's best friend is buried. Edwin had obtained information, including a photograph, of my father's friend. Our visit to the Hurtgen took us deep into the forest-Edwin had figured out exactly where my dad's unit was during that awful battle. Exactly what I had hoped for.
It was a very meaningful day and Edwin was great-exceeded expectations. He was very well prepared and made it an unforgettable day.
