Market Garden – US 82nd Airborne Division at Nijmegen

475.00

Gavin’s 82nd Airborne Division was given a very difficult task to accomplish during Market Garden. Assigned an area that demanded the deployment of two divisions, the 82nd had to secure eleven bridges crossing two rivers and a canal whilst the Groesbeek Heights and an airborne army headquarters that landed with them necessitated troops held back for security. Soon after landing, Gavin’s airborne troops were pushed to their limits to defend the division area against German counterattacks and simultaneously capture the bridges in Nijmegen in one of the most dramatic actions in American military history, in close cooperation with the British ground troops.

Description

Africa, Sicily, Salerno, the Italian mountains, Anzio, Normandy; the US 82nd Airborne Division was the most experienced airborne division the Allies fielded by 1944. During operation Market Garden, their task was to conquer the bridges from Grave to Nijmegen and to defend the Groesbeek Heights against German attacks from the Reichswald. Despite all their experiences before and after Market Garden, many 82nd Airborne veterans would later say they experienced many of their toughest fights at Nijmegen.
