At 13:00 on September 17, 1944, the three parachute infantry regiments of US 101st Airborne Divisions landed on Son and Schijndel Heaths and at Heeswijk Castle. The Germans in this area responded quickly and violently, interrupting the road several times. Heavy fighting broke out for possession of this road.
